rewind my name is Jessica Walter and I'm a third grade distance learning teacher in January of this year I began thinking about our upcoming forces and motion unit and how I would teach the concepts on acceleration balanced and balanced forces and kinetic energy how I would do that remotely and I knew that if I were in the physical classroom best practice of course would be to get those materials into the hands of my learner's sold they could explore these Concepts in an authentic way and I knew that I had to give my remote Learners the same opportunities so each student was given a stem kit so they build and explore the concept of forces and motion that we are going to be learning about so in this particular activity that you're going to see students are studying acceleration momentum gravity and friction and kinetic and potential energy as they make their way through the six steps of the Engineering Process their goal here is to use what they know about horses in motion if you do roller coaster that can sing cefaly guide their marble from start to finish without the use of any outside forces only that of energy momentum and gravity that we had been learning about so here is a look inside find our work with forces and motion are right I know we are all very excited today so I want to make sure we are prepared and ready for see some friends are very excited and are empty empty hands she might see my screen moving all over the place empty-handed and recording our next steps today which I know you guys I'm very excited about Kay we've got to go over what we did yesterday and remind ourselves of what we learned what our first couple steps were in the process, and when we get to move on today imagining and creating our roller coasters and your job right now is to put two hands on your head if you can see our let's build a roller coaster book you're right let's review our first two steps in our Engineering Process that we completed yesterday for your first job was to research Summit designs let's move on now to your material you were going to be really roller coaster that have all of your supplies and there's what is show me if you've got that with you as you got a chance to dig into your envelopes yesterday and look at your supplies your job was to write George raw about the materials you have to use and how you might use them so what I'm looking for right now is a few friends to share out could you pick one thing it's you found in your stay show us what it was and tell us how you plan to use it alright more are using very excited about this one so go ahead and start us off okay so do paper I think I find it at the moment but I have this pool noodle and then I'm going to take this off Stan want to cut hole on my cut almost equal windows can anybody pick a different material from their stem kit and tell me how they plan on using it LOL what is you find answer me this heavy duty paper we're in it that I could use for the track so it's more heavy-duty off while you're going on it so you plan to use that paper for your track I'm wondering Ella did you notice anything in videos that you watched yesterday that gave you an idea about what you could add can that paper or do to that heavy duty paper to make your roller coaster track open you might change about the way the paper is right now on the side of it to make it more flexible create those curves and also to give its insides Sammy what you find I found a person that I used to put stuff together keep things together in place of some tape maybe all right let's go to one more friend Malachi can you tell us about one material that you found and how you plan to use it as you can structure roller coaster today Subway I am going to do is I'm going to take my yellow piece of paper that I found and I'm going to dress Circle in the middle and then cut out the circle like she did like what is a people did one of the videos and I Could Have Lied down to the middle of the circle and then push it in as much as I don't want to make a quick skillet my friends give me a big thumbs up if you are ready to get started today alright lots of friends who are excited so put your so we are on a very exciting step in our Engineering Process of imagining designing today the moment we have been waiting for your job today is to draw or sketch your design and make sure that you've labeled different have your track and then once you have your design uploaded here that is your ticket to be okay to build Jesus or two tools I want you to make sure you was today the recording you boys using photos or recording yourself building in your building process okay question like that we have at our house like other rubber bands Chinese or other paper other stuff you have your packet because I wanted us all to make sure we had access to the same thing but if your design the way you're imagining it includes other things that you have around your house that's okay to all right I see my friends getting into those materials you are ready to go so job number one you are doing your sketchy or sketching your prototype with labels after you have uploaded your picture that is your ticket to start building and remember I would love to see videos of you building So Gone record yourself as you're getting some of those materials together today okay right now if you are all set hey I'm going to open some breakout rooms and Rico Rooms Today will be by your choice, right so you will have teacher support in rooms 1 and 2 and 3 and your other rooms are in you like to brainstorm and work with your classmates on your design okay so I'm going to go ahead and open up those rooms now yet with your materials you need to open up your envelope and see what you've got I kind of think about a plan Ella when when I'm getting ready to take my picture of it like I'm going to redo my roller coaster cute paper in our Falls or salad or supposed to be using to dry it out probably you're welcome to use the paper to dry it out I have a I'm just now starting to draw my plan have you planned on using play cruelty free and just normal pictures okay paper pool table mine cuz I'm going to do with it All of Me showing all the different spots but this is what it's going to look like I love how you challenge yourself and you have lots of twists and turns there right now I am this is what I have so far that's the pool noodle and these are two pieces of paper the pool is going to be connected to something up high but when the marble down is that it comes out here by the end of the roller coaster malachite what kind of energy do we want to be running out potential close what's the other type for an object object to keep moving on its own by the end of the roller coaster we in this case for the car slow down because it's running out of that kinetic energy right and that's why you can stop instead of a really fast hold his like if I had to trap Hi and then it ruins down if it's just going from the traffic being really high and have feeling up a lot of kinetic energy when it comes down and it lands on the PC it's going to snow have the energy but flat on the ground when it hits the ground underneath it and I'll still keep growing in a stopping point but it'll be much much much slower what's another Force that's blowing that marble down as it goes across that paper remember gravity is also playing a part of friction how can I start building my mom doesn't know how to work it my love okay so here's what I want you to do just get your drawing done I can help you upload it later today a bunch of Lights the people that we didn't know what to do after they finish coloring we supposed to start building right.
